Weird growth on Cordyline

I purchased a Cordyline this spring that I had on my patio.  I brought it in for the winter and now it has this weird stem growth.  Any ideas what is happening?  I also dont know if I am over watering or underwatering?

Do you check the compost before watering? The quick method is to stick your finger in. If it's dry at the depth of one or two knuckles, it's time to water. The browning leaves could indicate underwatering, but could indicate other things like cold exposure or physical damage or dry air or too much direct sun (maybe when it was outside).
