Fungi on tree stump rotted black mess

I’ve never noticed this before but the fungi that was growing on around a eucalyptus tree stump must have rotted and turned into a big black mushy mess. Is this normal? I think previously I got rid of the fungi before they rotted and just put it in the compost bin. This time as a black mess is it safe to do this. Why did it rot like this?

    it's just the "fruiting" part of the fungus which has "died" .
    Perfectly normal ( just like mushrooms if you don't eat them quickly enough )

    it’s so strange, I’ve never seen fungi become a big black oozy mess. I should have taken a photo but I’ve scooped it up and put it in the leaf bin. Is it safe to add it to the compost bin?

    The most common fungi to 'dissolve' are the Ink caps - some photo's from google:

    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    Lots of fungi decay like that. Shaggy inkcaps are renowned for deliquescing for example. The compost bin is an appropriate destination.

    "deliquescing" WOW, that's a new word for me.
