Erigeron in a container through winter

harmonyharmony Posts: 403
Hi, i have 7 erigeron plants bought in June this year  as garden ready plants, they are in an old washing up bowl ( I added draining holes ). I have a couple of chimney pots for their final resting places but I am wondering if I should leave this while next spring and if I do would they be okay through the winter where they are or will they need protection. They are on my patio (south facing)  against an ivy covered fence just now so are quite sheltered. I dont have a greenhouse but have one of those small ones with a plastic zip up cover that I put my bedding geraniums in which have come through the 2 last winters. Thanks..

Hi Harmony, I would put them in your zip up greenhouse over the winter to give them more protection against frost. They will die back and look quite dead ( they are perennials) but should burst into life again next spring, when you can cut off the dead bits On sunny days, unzip the cover for a few hours to let fresh air in, then close it up again before nightfall. If it's very cold, a sheet of fleece (not bubble wrap) or even some newspaper, over the top of them will help. Seven's too many for a small washing up bucket, just one of mine would fit in there so you may need to find homes for the others come the spring.

Thankyou Lizzie, yes I have a few empty chimney pots and containers for them and I will follow your advice and protect them until spring. Thankyou

No probs, they are gorgeous plants and you've reminded me to go and rescue one of mine that's in a container in an exposed spot.
