Cut Christmas tree outside?

TheGreenManTheGreenMan Posts: 1,957
Forgive me if this is a stupid question (I can’t find an answer on Google) but can I buy a cut Christmas tree and put it in the garden?

Not to grow of course but just for Christmas?

Pop it in a pot with lots of soil and decorate it?

I have a potted one from 2017 that I have kept alive and it’s quadrupled in size but I don’t need another potted one.

Help 🤔🙂

Thanks, as always, J.

Yes - is the short answer.  :)

I was wondering where you'd got to - hadn't seen you posting recently. Hope you're ok.  :)

  • As a plus, it will also likely last a lot longer outside than if kept indoors. :)

    Indeed @BobTheGardener :)
I always bought mine in early December, cut a bit off the bottom, and left in a bucket of water until the week before C'mas.
I never understand why people have them inside for weeks and then complain about needles dropping  :D

It would be much better off. Make sure you give it as drink regularly - water is best😉

Birds love them.. I put mine outside after Christmas in the stand and keep the water topped up if it's not frozen.. the birds love the shelter as it's on the patio near to the feeder.

We do the same as @Fairygirl now and buy one as soon as they appear then keep it outside in a bucket of water till it's time to ring it in and decorate it.  LIDL have them on sale from next Wednesday, a whole thirsty month before Xmas.

I have an old galvanised laundry tub that I've painted in red and green with gold stencils of Xmas trees and snowflakes for when it's indoors so it can sit in water indoors too.

Hi Greenman, I was travelling down Durham Rd Gateshead on the 21 bus and was surprised to see cut trees for sale at a greengrocers. I had the same idea as yourself, I’m sure it will work if we follow the good advice given.
I was wondering if IKEA would be selling trees this year, in the past the gave a £20? voucher with each tree to use in January.

    Thanks, all.

I shall give the local woods a visit when they open up their shop next weekend.

@Bilje that would have been very handy this time last year but I’m in Rowlands Gill now. Luckily we have Chopwell Woods nearby.

@Fairygirl I’ve been busy decorating the house as well as doing the same for a friend so had NO time for anything other than that and my other job and sleeping.

I’m finally finished in time to relax into December. 👍🏼
