Compost mixer

Hello Gardeners

I have found myself custodian (owner) of a large compost mixer, it’s an excellent well built old machine (3phase ((but can be converted to 240v easily)) made by Universal Fabrications) for making mixes of different compost types. It seems a shame to scrap it. Could it be of use to a keen gardener who’s making their own compost?

Best

Sam, South Cumbria.

Maybe. How about offering it on your local Freecycle and see if there are any takers.

  • It involves a certain amount of work to make it moveable, fixing puncture, and poss converting to 240v. So a small amount of money would need to be involved.
Question is, do gardeners possibly of the Charles Dowding type school mix compost types for different plant/veg. It hold 1 ton at a time. It’s sort of small for industrial scale market gardening/farming but on the big side for gardens but then some folks have big gardens and many compost heaps… So question remains, has anyone heard of gardeners mixing their own compost mixes …??
    Thanks

  • Most gardeners mix their own compost to get the right consistency/makeup for the plants they are growing.
Perhaps like many, I use a bin or bucket - can be time consuming but at least you only need make the mixture you require immediately.
A machine would certainly be handy but could pose a problem re convenient electric supply, space and storage when not in use.
If you have Allotments local to you, they may well be interested.

I think lots of gardeners mix things like loam, grit, sharp sand, perlite, rotted manure, home-made compost etc into bought compost, to better suit the needs of particular plants. I do it in a big trug bucket for the quantities I'm using. I wouldn't have the space to keep a compost-mixing machine but I'm sure someone somewhere would.

We’ve got a redundant cement mixer,  I wonder if that would work.
