Plant growth rate

Hi everyone, I've been trying to find an answer to this (potentially really silly) question for ages but have had no luck: when a plant is expected to grow e.g. 40cm in a year, what exactly does that mean? Would it be 40cm just in vertical growth? 40cm taller and wider? Each existing branch grows 40cm? Thanks

    It depends a bit on the plant, but i think it usually means height.
    Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

    The RHS site gives height and spread details and how long to max height
    In London. Keen but lazy.
