Hop Plant not thriving

Hi.  I planted hop plants 2 seasons ago.  All seemed well 1st year when the plants cropped and produced a modest crop (2 ounzes).  I wasn't expecting a lot given it was a new plant and so that seemed fine and looked forward to this year when i expected more.

This year all seemed to start off well and the plants developed stems and grew through June and July at the expected rate.  However growth seemed to tail off and the plants then didn't produce a crop at all.

Any ideas what is should do over the winter and beyond to start to see a good crop each year.  I grow in large tubs against an east facing wall so in sun from Dawn until about 1/2pm during the summer

  • I suspect the problem is to do with them being in tubs. They grow into huge plants and accordingly need a large amount of root room.
They also need a loamy soil so if they’re in multipurpose compost that won’t be sufficient for them. And they can be thirsty plants so possibly haven’t had enough water to grow well.

I recently dug up an ornamental hop. The roots were monsters and so I think confining your plants to tubs is the problem. Give them plenty of space - they could invade.
