Olive tree branches dying

Our olive tree planted in soil that’s watered probably too much, has had primary branches dying off for the last few months.  I’ve cut them back, and other branches still have great growth, but it definitely appears like there is a problem that is slowly taking over and killing the entire tree.  How can I stop this!??  The dead branches have thus far all stemmed from the primary trunk of the tree

    Hello @brentwag44HMZA-R

The tree overall looks okay to me.  The branches you are holding seem dead so I would just nip them off.  Olive trees do lose their leaves but are evergreens.  I don't think you can overwater when they are young.

It could do with a prune as it seems to be crowded in the middle and may need some air circulating around it.   You can safely prune now until March.   I keep mine clear in the middle (the saying goes:  a dove should be able to fly through it) - so wingspan of a dove width!!  I have enclosed a photo of mine but it is now 30 years old - grown from a side "trunk" of an older tree.

    Good luck

To get the effect of the 2 trunks going in different directions, my husband put a plank of  of wood between the branches for a couple of years.
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

....And don't throw all the prunings away.  Arrange a few branches in a vase to give that Mediterranean feel during winter!!
