Overwintering Echium

Posts

  • Mine is the Echium pininana, native to the Canary Isles and growing merrily all over Cornwall as seen in these pics of the ones at the Minack Theatre. https://outofmyshed.co.uk/tag/echium-growing-in-cornwall/

It was given to me as a seedling by a friend in Cornwall and took three rather than two years to get to flowering.

  • These are self setters that I've dug up this year and will be overwintering in a greenhouse to then plant out in spring.

  • There are some of these around where I live in Norwich, the blue flowered species. They must do ok here because the immaculate garden they are grown in is next to a rather unkempt one and it to has them growing happily so they must be ok to survive mild winters here. It's something I've thought about growing but just not got round to it.

Do slugs like these? They like my other echium species.

Ah you're in Norwich @thevictorianzFH0qqPW .... we're probably not too far away from you ... we're over on the southwest edge of the city <waving smiley>
You may well have seen the big echiums in the churchyard at Cromer

I’ve never had slugs attack on them.

  • Hi @Dovefromabove I'm not to far from Mousehold heath and the echiums I have seen were near Thunder lane. We only ever go to Cromer at Christmas, although haven't been for years, so haven't seen them but it's good to know thanks.
  • Well @thevictorianzFH0qqPW  😊 it’s a small world … we used to live in that area … then when we moved this way I drove through Mousehold Heath every day on my way to work at Sprowston  😊

Would there be any chance of these surviving on the NE coast of Scotland?

My guess is virtually nil, unless you have the most fabulous microclimate.
I think combination of cold rain and  cold strong winds and low temperatures wouldn't do them any favours

  • They’re a native of the Canary Islands …. I don’t think they stand a chance up your way. 😢
