@robairdmacraignil thanks, great minds, Midget is already on my list! I’m afraid the golden choisya has been bumped off in favour of the caryopteris though.

I was also looking for similar for a shady corner and went for Hydrangea aspera 'Gold Rush', but it grows quite large and maybe not suitable for your conditions.

I hack my PA down to sticks every year to keep it small.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

@Balgay.Hill size aside I think I would struggle to keep a hydrangea sufficiently hydrated to keep it alive in summer, but thanks for the suggestion.

Visions of you taking a machete to your Personal Assistant there @B3, well they can get uppity, I believe.  Knowing me I will order both that and the Cotinus and have a beauty contest for the spot.

Hi @LToby, I’m not a great fan of conifers tbh, but do have a Goldcrest in another part of the garden and it’s grown to around 4m in as many years and still shooting up, so it would get too big for I’m afraid. According to my supplier the Castlewellan Gold can eventually get to 18m high so keep those pruners to hand! Lovely garden btw 😊

I’m pretty happy with my shortlist now, but thanks everyone for your input, you’ve all opened up my options considerably and it’s very much appreciated.

I'd just like to say what an interesting and informative thread this has been. I have enjoyed reading the contributions.
    The Forum at its best.
  • Would Osmanthus heterophyllus variegatus work?
It is in flower now in our garden (UK) lovely scent and leaves all year round.
Can grow into a tree but easily pruned to shrub size.
    A great plant to have.
  • Hi there.  I have carex ice dance, euonymus emerald and gold (I think) and anemanthele lessoniana pheasant grass all growing in shade that brighten up a north facing corner for me.  Also love lonicera nitida baggesen's gold.
Some other great ideas on here as well that I might use if I can persuade my better half to let me buy!! 🙂

How about a non-variegated Euonymus, like E. Japonicus 'El Dorado', although it may be on the small side for your purposes?  As you know, Euonymus are generally 'good doers', growing in almost any conditions.

In another garden I grew Sambucus racemosa plumosa aurea, which I found to be quite beautiful with its ferny, lime/yellow foliage... probably grows anywhere..
