Crab apples why is the flesh brown inside?

Hi Folks
I have just taken my first crop of crab apples from my Jelly King tree. The tree is about 5ft tall and was planted in the spring. I was intending to make a little jelly. I have cut into a couple of the apples and the flesh is brownish. Can I still use the apples for jelly? I wondered if this is a problem and if I should put the apples on my compost heap instead? I haven't used pesticides or fungicides on the tree, and it appears to be healthy.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks
Richard

  • I suspect this is just old age - ie the fruit has been left too long on the tree before picking.  My early cooking apples do this too, if I leave them to go yellow before picking.

It's a pity, but you may need to pick them earlier next year... I'd put those on the compost heap, I'm afraid.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
