caladium

Do these plants need to be brought indoors now.  They have been out in pots in the summer but now look as if they have rotted in the pot.

Thank you.

I'd never heard of this so I had to look it up. It seems to be a houseplant, so if it's rotten, it suggests it's had it. It would probably have needed to be brought inside a lot sooner.
Someone else who's familiar with it may have better advice though   :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Caladiums are half-hardy tuberous plants and will rot in cold, wet winter weather.  They can be grown as houseplants but I found it quite difficult to get the conditions right for them inside.  I thought I had lost them and stuck the pots under the bench in my frost-free greenhouse but actually they revived and put on lots of new growth in the Spring afterwards, so the following year I just treated them like Cannas and kept them dry and cool but frost-free over the winter .  This works for me, with a Spring re-potting and later planting out when the weather warms up enough, or they also make good ornamental plants for the greenhouse in the summer.
  • Thank you for the information.  I will put them in the shed tomorrow and wait with fingers crossed.
