Soil PH levels

Advice please.....
I have been given a lovely Rhododendron and would like to plant it in the garden, but if the PH is too high I will put it in a pot. I broke my PH tester but remember the ph didn't seem to vary  much between my different garden beds. Would you expect this to be the case (obviously raised beds I have created will be different).

There is an area with several ericaceous plants which seem to be flourishing, and if all the 'natural  beds' are about the same PH, it may explain why the same plant in two different beds have grown very differently. (sunlight/moisture about the same).

Which is better for testing? A PH meter with a prong or a soil testing kit?

Not sure I follow your logic here, if the beds have the same pH, sunlight and moisture what is causing the difference in plant growth? It is likely to be nutrient levels. If you have other ericaceous loving plants growing well then your rhodo should be fine so I wouldn't bother with pH testing.
