No, it’s made of wool and mohair, no plastics (polyester) filling. It was expensive though. They don’t make this green malarkey easy. Just got the winter duvet to change and bedding is plastic free. Cotton duvets are so comfortable, I hate the plastic ones now.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Sorry, @Nanny Beach - only just seen your question on the previous page. I'm not sure my experience will be directly relatable to you, since I'm in a detached bungalow in the west of Ireland,. and the cost of electricity is different, plus it's running radiators but not supplying hot water (we have solar panels and an exhaust air heat extraction system for that). The heat pump is outside, on the north side of the house, 5 feet from the bedroom window. It's very quiet, though a little noisier when defrosting itself if the temperature is below freezing. The unit is a metal box which looks a bit like an old fashioned storage heater, with a big fan in it behind a grille. The electric gubbins which controls it is on a board in the loft. We're still working out what it's costing us in electricity, because it's relatively new, but last year's bills were around €1000 (about £850). Hope that helps.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
What has Greta done wrong!we produce a small amount of the planets
'green house gas compared to US,China, India,Russia, why is she not
visiting those countries. She rants, swears, offering no practical
solutions.
We are aware of 'the message'. I don't like Greta's choice of delivery. I don't need some self confessed mental ill child (as she was at 16) telling me what to do. I frankly cannot do any more. Same as EI just get people's backs up by causing disruption, that doesn't help anyone. As so many of them are wealthy,a couple have million quid property rentals, why do they not just cough up for the insulation themselves.
Per person emissions 2021:
India 1.58 tons
UK 5.99 tons
China 6.59 tons
Russia 10.19 tons
USA 15.53 tons
China and India get a lot of blame for their emissions but remember that we've outsourced a lot of our emissions to them for manufacturing and shipping etc as have quite a number of other countries. The USA has no excuse though.
We've had this same argument before so there's not much point in going over it again but you said last time you didn't discriminate against mental illness. Steve Jobs had autism and was worth $10billion when he died. Perhaps mental illness is the wrong term? Greta is widely regarded as one of the most influential voices for her generation. Her message is always addressed to world leaders rather than individuals. You don't have to agree with her but environmental protesters around the world are being subjected to misinformation campaigns, hate messages and increasing numbers have been murdered to protect the interests of the governments and corporations she protests about.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
@Nanny Beach. I am surprised to hear you discriminate against someone who has mental health issues with your own family problems. Greta has at least helped to focus attention on some of the problems we face. I am sure you do your very best to reduce your environmental impact on the world, probably more than many others. We can’t do much but we can all do something. Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Young people today constantly impress me with their caring and thoughtful attitudes about each other and the world around them. I wish I had had their energy and commitment when I was younger, I wish we all had, then maybe we wouldn’t be in this situation.
I'm not discriminating against Greta because she has mental illness. Where are her solutions? I said she said that about herself. Trust me,you should hear my sons screaming, ranting raving about whatever they are 'into' at that particular time. I have had 20 years of it. I spent 40 years nursing, like to think I've done some good,I have worked in mental health units, with violence. Then you go home after a 12 plus hour night shift and get a phone call from a son saying he's going to kill himself. Took the dogs on the beach this morning, talking to a chap, maybe 50s who has just lost his wife,he thanked me for taking the time to chat with him. The "young" today had far more than I ever did. I see the kids of primary school age trotting by on their smartphones.like to think I've always had energy and commitment. At 13,I was a volunteer at my local hospital. I work free for our local parish council. We collect rubbish on the beach,my husband goes out weekly litter picking. I did look after an elderly chap 6 days a week, till earlier this year when he ended up owing me £250 for shopping
A bit of reading for the weekend - 7 years old - so maybe out of date now. But from a quick scan it seems to address my concerns - ie that we move into something that ends up causing as many issues that it's there to solve.
'...THE TRANSITION MUST NOT DESTROY THE ECOSYSTEMS IT WAS PUT IN MOTION TO PROTECT...'
The report looks at offshore windfarms and their side effects - hopefully, it will show me that my concerns have been addressed and we're not going ahead full pelt without assessing what the damage may be in 20...30...etc years.
I'm not discriminating against Greta because she has mental illness. Where are her solutions?
You already said that you don't want a 'mentally ill child' telling you what to do, so why are you asking for her to provide solutions? I'm certainly not expecting a women of her age to solve a global climate crisis, we have legions of long-ignored scientists for that. I'm sure you can appreciate how valuable it is for young people to feel like they have a voice in the debate though.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
@Nanny Beach I am sure as a nanny you know how many pressures are on young people today that are not compensated for by a smart phone. I wouldn’t want to be young today. Greta is someone that people listen to.
The move away from gas will probably just be because 'the west' doesn't want to depend on Russian gas for its energy supply. Ditto the move to electric vehicles will be to lessen our economies dependence on middle east oil rich countries. The politicians don't give a shit about 'the planet'.
