Hi Dovefromabove, rain has stopped so I popped out to get closer shots of our neighbour's tree. I think the consensus is a smooth leaved, self-fertile holly. Lovely tree but don't like it spreading into our garden! Hope you are having a good day. regards
I'd agree with @Buttercupdays, and the pix seem to back that up. I passed one today when I was out. It'll be fine being cut back hard. Might be best to take some individual branches back completely to the main trunk and see how it looks
Which part of the Highlands are you in - roughly? I haven't been 'up' for a while.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
We are by the Cromarty Firth. Only been here nearly 4 years - we moved from Yorkshire to retire to a quieter life but as they say "never been busier" ! We will have a word with the neighbours and see what we can do, Thanks again for your interest and your answers. regards
Love holly. When I was small(a long time ago) there was a huge holly hedge (tree sized and half a mile long) on the edge of the farm, and every year about now a Romany family would come and cut it to take to sell at a Covent Garden.
Yes you can cut it back hard … it really won’t mind … but it will respond by growing back so it’ll be a regular job every couple of years or so. But a holly tree is a lovely thing and so good for wildlife … the flowers, the berries and the shelter for small birds.
My (long defunct)family coat of arms has ‘a rod of holly proper’ at the top. Perhaps that’s why I love it … it’s in my genes 🤣
