Moving salvias

Hello, I would need to move my salvias (Salvia ‘amethyst lips’ and S. officinalis), as they are currently in a too crowded area. The first was planted in early spring this year and the other was grown from seeds this summer. Can I do it now or should I wait until spring? Any specific tips on how to move Salvias without doing too much damage to the plant?
Thank you very much everyone:-)

  • I need to lift all mine, as they won't survive outside here. I just get my fork, stick it in and loosen around them, then lift and plonk in a pot with a bit of compost. Water them to settle them in, job done. All now looking happy in the GH.

I would hold off moving them until spring, and do it just as they're starting to show signs of new growth. Moving them is much the same as anything else - water before and after, and move as big a ball of soil around the roots as you can manage. You'll be pruning the "lips" one down when it starts re-growing in spring anyway so you can do that before or after moving.

I leave them too, until the spring. Moving stresses an already tender plant, just as we're going into frost-prone weather.

It depends where @irens.loi17 lives though.
Like @Buttercupdays, salvias wouldn't survive here [apart from the caradonna one] so would have to be lifted and put undercover. Left out, they'd die anyway.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Yes, your soil type is very important as well as the climate. Salvia need really good drainage so even here in the deep south I have to rescue mine before the heavy clay becomes waterlogged.
