Although cyber security experts say Booking.com itself has not been hacked, criminals have found ways to get into the admin portals of many hotels which use the site and try to scam their customers.

Scammers have intensified their attacks recently.  If you receive a text/email purporting to be from Booking.com and claiming there's something "wrong" with your payment, it may be safer to ignore the text but contact Booking.com direct.

OH received one of those texts in October, which, apparently, was quite convincing but, luckily for us, it arrived minutes after we had official confirmation of the booking.

For those who may not have heard of it: https://www.takefive-stopfraud.org.uk/about/take-five/

Scam warning: Criminals may purport to be from Take Five, using our official branding on websites, social media posts, literature, on the phone or by text. Take Five doesn’t provide endorsement or approval for any products/services and would never call or text anyone.

    STOP

Taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information could keep you safe.

    CHALLENGE

Could it be fake? It’s ok to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.

    PROTECT

Contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve fallen for a scam and report it to Action Fraud.

The site has much information about fraud.

Yesterday, OH received an authentic-looking email, saying the direct debit for our TV licence had failed.

When we logged into TV Licensing, we discovered that the scammers', email gave an incorrect renewal date and a false licence number, made up of 12 digits instead of 10.

  • Good to know.  Ours is due early next year.

Thank you, Helen.  OH, who thinks gardening is just cutting the grass, will be given oodles of stuff.  Hopefully, he'll get the hint! ;)

There is a spate of empty boxes being parked by garage doors around here. Apparently if it is taken in,  the burglars assume someone is in. If it stays there for 24 hours, they are away.    Keep an eye out for each other, people.

There is also a lot of hacking going on around small businesses. Myself and OH came very close to being scammed for 5k. This is from someone we owed money to for a job, had no problem paying up, but himself he had been hacked and false bank details were sent. We are dealing in large sums as we are building a house.
Chatting to all our contractors, this sort of hacking is rife, they had all lost money. We now send £1 and get it confirmed its the correct account before paying any more money.
