I have summarised it. The rest of the Email was far more unpleasant than that.

    • If it’s a call, hang up, find a number you can trust, and call back on that
    • If it’s your bank, you can call back using the number on the back of  your card
That is the worse thing you can do.  If you want to phone back you must do it on a different phone.

    Would anyone here trust Checkatrade?

We have seen mixed reactions but also cross referencing other sites sometimes trades seem okay.

But also seen that the likes of Checkatrade can be manipulated by trade persons using it?

Sometimes one may have a reason not to wait for a trusted tradesman you trust to do a job, it cannot wait.

Then despite your best efforts, you end up being screwed over.

The use of a different phone is not a must, though it's a good idea to wait a couple of minutes, or so, before ringing your own bank, just in case the scammer is hanging on the line and in your confusion you don't notice the "open line tone" when you pick up your phone.

A few years back, though I don't remember exactly when, I saw a tv programme about Checkatrade and how it operates.  Apparently, one of the reporters applied to join.  All he had to do to be acceptrd was pay the registration fee; they didn't even interview him.  If I remember correctly, several of its members, who took part in the programme, said the same.  As a result, we have never engaged a C/atrader.
If we can't get recommendations by family or friends, we use traders from Which Trusted Traders, which is free on line, and thus far, it's been fine.
Perhaps things have changed recently with C/atrader.

QR co... here is a sad tale  to bear in mind for those who do use them.

    How dreadful!

Thanks @Helen P3, I read around and it was such a mixed bag.

@Pansyface, I don't like the QR codes either and never had to use them so far.
It is not only the fact people are scammed, bad enough in itself.
But the stress and upset of trying to get it rectified after.

This may be of interest to someone.

Recently, I clicked on a video and immediately a message came up on my screen:

Microsoft has blocked your computer because you have been attacked by a Trojan Horse!  Do not try to turn your computer off as you will lose all your data.  Simply, phone this number and Microsoft will fix the issue......

I turned the computer off straightaway and also turned off the WiFi connection at the wall.  Waited about half an hour and phew....!  Everything was back to normal.  I cleared all the browsers in case they had dropped in a cookie or two.

If you have a halfway decent Anti-virus program on your computer, it should stop any Trojans as soon as they appear. Mine does.
