Peony

I bought a new peony from Farmer Gracy. I know they like shallow planting but in doing that it means the new shoots, which are showing already, will be exposed to the winter weather. Will they be OK? Or should I give them some protection with a mulch or some fleece?

It'll be fine. They're hardy plants, but it's worth taking time to acclimatise it a bit in case it's been grown undercover.
They don't want the main crown any deeper than about an inch below the soil level. I keep mine slightly higher because of the rainfall here.
It also depends what sort of size and maturity it is though. A young, small plant would be best potted on until next year.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • They are tough plants. I bought some from FG last year, good sized rhizomes, potted them up over winter and planted them out in the spring. The Bowl of Beauty even flowered this year :)

  • Yes, it is a large plant. I think they grow them outside. Thanks for answers.
