Garlic help please

Hi all, sorry for such a basic question , I am just starting out..... I'm so confused what I am supposed to plant the garlic cloves in ( using containers) . I know it needs to be well draining, what does everyone else use??? ( don't have any nurseries nearby and B&Q are useless!) I am looking for a specific answer like " use John Innes no2 mixed with etc etc " ..... many thanks again and apologies for a basic question.

I’ve planted mine straight into the soil.  Is there a special reason that you want to plant them in containers?

Garlic is prone to fungal diseases if not in well drained soil so some people start them off in modules to get them started before planting them out in the garden.  If you are growing them in containers because space in the garden is limited or you only have containers on a balcony, you need to use a loam based compost such as John Innes no 2 or 3 for drainage but could mix in up to 20% multi purpose for moisture retention so they don't dry out completely but don't sit in wet compost either.

After reading the above yesterday, I went and purchased some decent compost and potted up 20 or so garlic cloves, they were purchased a couple of weeks ago and the green shoots are already showing, it feels early, but I think the cold helps them, it's freezing here this morning, this year I am going to try harder in the garden, I suffer with masses of weeds, even though I turn the soil and add good fertilizer, I have a couple of no-dig plots and even in those the weeds are showing, still have large onions in one, the other was a bit of a mistake, it is under conifers (they overhang from next door) the needles are too much.
