Recommendations Please

Hi , fairly new to Gdn and just wanted some advice . I have a very sunny patio in summer and planted some Acres in Pots last year but think its too sunny for them as all the leaves have dropped. I will move to a more shaded area but wanted some recommendations for large plants that will thrive in full sun in pots

Pittosporum Tobira, scented white flowers, glossy evergreen leaves. Oleanders, also evergreen, and scented flowers. Have got both happily growing in our south facing front garden in pots. Acer's are Japanese woodland shrubs, they don't like the sun or exposed sites that are windy

Acers need dappled shade, moisture and drainage, plus wind protection, so that's the site you need for them. A sunny, exposed site isn't ideal for them.
What size are the pots you want to put plants in? There are plenty that will be fine, but most shrubs are trickier in pots unless they have the right soil and ongoing care.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks , appreciated I have a corner of the Patio that is sheltered and gets partial sun so will move them to there , the pots are a decent size not sure of the Ltrs but 56 cm diameter and 50cm depth and then a couple of smaller pots , was looking for a central feature for the area without going with a large Olive

    Decent enough size then.  :)
You must be in a very mild area if you could have Olives growing outside. Foliage plants for over winter - like those @Nanny Beach mentions, or almost any evergreen for a temporary solution. Columnar yew, Phormiums, or one of the larger Hebes etc.
If you wanted a change for the summer, many of the ornamental grasses are suitable, some of the smaller clematis on an obelisk, roses,  or just annuals like sweet peas or Ipomoea [morning glory] on an obelisk or support, for height.

  • Thanks for the suggestions Fairygirl and Nanny, will go and get some research done with some good starting points
