Red Robin - pruning

We've just planted a row of red robins to create a hedge along one of our boundaries. They're all roughly 4ft at the moment. I've read that I shouldn't prune after August, so don't plan to touch them for a while, but my questions are:
1. When can I first prune them?
2. How will I know which bits to prune?

We want a dense, roughly 6-7ft hedge.

Thanks in advance!

Ideally, you'd have given them trim after planting, but they're normally done during early summer after all frosts etc are over, and you have enough growth to trim. You would then prune as needed in summer as it's for hedging.
Most people wait until they've had the benefit of the red foliage, assuming you have the right climate for them to get that growth and be healthy.  :)
