A bit worried about my Allium bulbs...

Hi all, it's my first time planting spring bulbs so it feels like a nervous trial and error... So I planted 8 Allium (Large Ball Mixed) bulbs in a big clay pot in early Sept, and put the pot in a shady place in my garden. I watered it after planting and left it alone afterwards. It seems like the compost in the pot has always been moist, because of the rain, and the fact that it's in the shade I guess. Now I'm starting to worry that the bulbs may rot in the wet?

Could you please let me know if I'm doing it correctly or not? Thanks!

If the soil mix in the pot is nice and gritty, it shouldn't be a problem.
If not, it might be worth tucking them somewhere - against a house wall or similar, so that they don't get waterlogged. It's only a problem if the soil mix is heavy, and you're in a very wet area.
The good thing about clay/terracotta pots is that they also absorb moisture, which can helps a bit.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you! I'll move the pot to somewhere more sheltered then.

Make sure you have the pots slightly raised above the ground,so they drain properly

Thanks! I've moved the pot to be next to a fence and sitting on top of some pebbles.

if it's very wet, prop it on its side to let any excess water drain out.
    Devon.
