Without the constant growth of our technology, gained from all the previous space exploration, we would not have have the knowledge that we are currently using to exploit greener energy and probably wouldn’t even be able to measure the global disaster that is climate change.
Without constantly exploring we are unlikely to survive.
How can you lie there and think of England

In a village not far from us,   Would you object?
everyone in agreement as to what should be done,  everyone in agreement,  not in my back yard.  They say it will spoil the countryside,  devalue their houses and ruin tourist trade.

Let's explore the deep oceans and the cells of the brain. We still barely know anything about the species we know we have on the earth, let alone the ones we know nothing of.

  • The issue with science is one never knows what or when a particular bit of knowledge will be useful and we are terrible at predicting this.  Penicillin for antibiotics was found studying mould and developed during ww2 which was quite a calamitous period to be doing this research.  Lots of gene therapy tech currently being developed were found studying bacteria /worms with no intention of treating humans or worms for that matter.  Moving away from biology, relativity for gps or discovery of nuclear energy were all part of what was then considered pointless exercise! But now we are relying on this to save our planet (bar the bomb).

Regarding Bill Gates, as far as I can see he has no bone in this game and has given most of his wealth away, which is quite rare. If anyone reads his book, they’ll notice how many experts/ scientists he has brought together to really understand the issues ahead  and possible solutions. I can bet my two pence he has more grip on this matter and cares more than any cop26 leaders chasing their 5 year terms.
  • The most environmentally friendly person who ever lived was Genghis Khan because whilst building his empire he killed so many people that the land they had cleared for farming was returned to forest. Apparently his actions caused the world to cool a little with the reduction of 700 million tonnes of co2.

Worth a watch if you're not offended by naughty language.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

    Blah blah blah

    :D
  • We just watched a recording of the trick, about the climate gate email hack, claiming that data was false. It nearly broke the lead scientist involved,  although he was exonerated by a number of independent inquiries it put the cause back a decade at least.

One of my best friends was in that UEA env team featured in The Trick. It was a deeply horrible time, having their private emails hacked and scutinised; accused of being frauds and their professional ethics attacked. The team of academics work so hard to research flood mitigation, human water usage forecasting, agricultural drought adaptation - they are all so personally committed to help - and then to get so personally blasted was shocking; like the world suddenly turned on them.
