Strawberries

Hi folks

When is it best to plant my new strawberry runners which are in plastic pots separated from the mother plants

  • You can plant them right now if you want...or overwinter them in the pots outside if they haven't filled the new pots as yet.

I've found strawberry plants to be very resilient. Mine have multiplied incredibly over the years and, despite my best efforts ;), I haven't managed to lose any.

If you're sure of the spot that you want them, put them in now (assuming they've established nicely). If you want to ponder a bit longer or don't want to brave the weather, they'll be fine in pots for the winter.

Im going to be taking the mother plants out and replacing them with the runners.

In that case, either remove the originals and plant the runners, or just wait until spring to do it. If you do it now, it's worth adding a bit of extra compost or similar to beef up the soil, and then a general feed in spring.
Or, keep the runners until spring - either in the pots they're in, or potted on into bigger ones if they've grown enough, and do the changeover then.
    They're bombproof really  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
