Next spring, you will likely get flowers appearing directly from the stems, before the leaves appear. I have red and white flowered ones. Chaenomeles do sucker, so you need to keep removing those, unless you are happy for it to spread. If fruit follows the flowers, it will stay on the shrub over most of the winter, and I've found the seeds are extremely easy to germinate (so much so that I now have too many in the garden!)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
