Compost as Lawn dressing?

I've heard of some people- even a lawn company- using compost as lawn dressing for autumn, rather than the traditional mix of loam, grit etc.

Anyone else heard of this, and will peat-free work as well?

  • Gives the lawn a boost but does nothing for levelling, drainage etc.

I've put spent compost from pots and baskets on my lawn occasionally. It adds some organic matter (good on my sandy soil) without overdoing the nutrients, and it helped to level up some shallow dips by putting more on those areas. It looked a bit of a mess at first even after a good brushing in, but the grass soon grew up through it.

The query is about using compost as a lawn dressing though, not using leaf mould for plants   :)
