Pictures of first year dahlia tubers grown from seed.

Lots of people have been asking about dahlias grown from seed this year and asking about the tubers. Below are my pics of seed grown dahlias. I don't like them that much as they are short-stemmed bedding dahlias, with each bloom lasting just over a day, too squashed in habit, so I am composting them now. If I had let the tubers continue to grow until the greenery blacked with frost, I imagine that the tubers would be even bigger. I want the pots for bulbs.

I think they are amazing plants to grow from seed to tubers like that in only about 6 months. Will you dry them off or dump them @Fire

I'm not keen.  I'd like to try some Bishops' Children to see what happens.

Mine have been a pain in the arse this year,  it’s been quite wet and the slugs have been out in full force,  I didn’t put them out until they were big plants, in 6” pots but they still got eaten.
Im not bothering next year, they can stay in the  ground and take their chances, they’ll overwinter but let’s hope for a dry spring.

I bought a small tray of them. They were ok says she damning with faint praise. They're on the compost heap now.

I leave my seed dahlias out in the border all winter and most of them come back even though I don't always want them to.

I did have a tangerine one a few years ago that was over 5ft
They really bring a warm glow into the garden in late autumn
