Mouldy substrate

I recently purchased a small Swiss Cheese Plant and i notice that the substrate: which is very woody, has developed a layer of mould on the top. 

How can I stop this?

    It's a normal process. All fungus/mould breaks down the compost/soil it's growing in. 
    They're mostly completely harmless and will disappear in time.
    Woody mediums are full of them  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....



    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
