Acer tree - long branches???

Hi

I have a recent addition in a pot-grown acer.

The branches it is growing seem to be overly long and not so bushy as per photo.

I have had to support it to stop it flopping over.

Is this normal or does the tree need pruning when it's in its dormant state to promote other branches?

Thanks in advance

Quite normal in many Acers. Growth habits vary, and so does the speed of growth.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • You don't say what kind of acer it is, but some have exactly this kind of weeping growth form eg Crimson Queen. I certainly wouldn't chop it back at this stage as it is still new.

Looks like it could grow into a very nice weeping type Acer.
How can you lie there and think of England
