Valerie's problem looks very simple to sort out. It's like what happens when a pot of peat-based MPC dries out in the summer ... you can water and water it and the water will run straight through and not rehydrate the peat ... you have to use a dash of washing up liquid as a 'wetting agent' to break down the surface tension of the water and allow it to soak into the peat ... et voilà ... the problem is solved
