What makes these holes?!

Asking for a friend(!) - any ideas?

I have started getting holes in my lawn. I have maybe 15 of them Now. Started about a month ago. They are small ish, about 5 cm wide and 3/4cm deep. Quite smooth. No claw marks. Not a big volcano like mound next to them. Quite scattered dirt I’d say and not lots of it. Almost like it got sucked back down the hole. Inside the main hole is a much smaller hole/burrow. Only about as big as a fat worm I’d say.

Picture attached..whatever it is.. my lawn has had it pretty much. I need to stop it getting worse.

We get crows and starlings doing that to our lawn early on damp mornings at this time of year … they’re getting the grubs like leatherjackets and cutworms that are eating the roots of your lawn.

It doesn’t seem to go in for long and it’s easy enough to brush a bit of topsoil into the holes in the spring. The lawn soon recovers. I don’t worry about it.
