The one that I mention is a perennial but you can buy annual rudbeckia seeds and they can be used as bedding plants. They are gorgeous, bright yellow bursts of sunshine.

Rudbeckias can be perennial or annual, and not all of them are hardy through winter, as it depends on your climate,  so it would be a case of overwintering it and seeing what happens next year - if it's a Rudbeckia  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • They’re in the greenhouse so I’ll keep them going, hopefully , over the winter & see what happens! Thanks everyone 😁
  • So today I was in the garden and I think this is it! I put a couple in the border to see if they’re hardy and this one has just flowered a little, I’m not even sure if it should be in flower in November! But I’m sure a lot of plants are confused at the moment?  So any ideas what it is?

  • Maybe Lobelia siphilitica ?

    Perthshire. SCOTLAND .

Agree, and yes it was used as a treatment for syphilis.
IMO there are much prettier Lobelias than that. Try L x speciousa Hadspen Purple.
How can you lie there and think of England

  • Oh punkdoc not sure if that’s good or bad news😱🤣. Ok so now I know, thank you!
Oh well that’s what you get with free seeds maybe not the best but better than nothing! I’ll go off & read about it now, may as well keep them going I’ve got about 30 still growing in little pots!
  • It likes damp soil and it is totally hardy, 2 very good reasons for me to like it!
I have some of the prettier ones, but they have to be lifted and cossetted over winter here.
