Has our Rowan tree had it?

Hi - we have a mature Rowan tree in our garden. Earlier this year I worried that it might have fireblight because some of its extremities turned brown and withered. Now nearly all of its leaves have turned brown and dry, and fallen off, much earlier than our other trees (and other Rowans in the village). What berries it did produce didn’t turn red either. Could it just have had a stressful year? Or do you think it’s had it and we should take it down? Any advice gratefully received.

  • If you bend and break a few twigs you'll see whether there is any sap/green within. If there is the it may come back next spring. If they break with a snap and are totally dry it has probably perished.

Unlikely to recover. If it's been very dry where you are - even over the last couple of years, it won't have enjoyed that. They need a lot of moisture to thrive. The grass is also a lot of competition for it.

It may simply have been finished anyway, if it's very old, or a combination.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Many thanks both! It’s quite sandy soil too so I expect it has not had enough water. Will have to find something else to plant there instead!
