As long as they aren't Asian hornets, it's nothing to worry about. We get European hornets nesting in the garden. They are no bother, although I prefer it if they aren't nesting in the house, because they are attracted to lights at night and they sit on the doors and windows, get sleepy with the cold, then fall off when you open the door/window in the morning - I'm always worried that the dogs will tread on one when they are crawling about on the floor.

  • @raisingirl, sorry I don’t know which type they are as they are fast, up in the top of an evergreen tree and I can’t get that close. I’ve tried taking a photo with my iPad and then enlarging it, but it’s just a blurred. Valerie

If they are quite yellow, they are European. The Asian ones are much darker - mostly brown. I think you're still supposed to report the Asian ones if you see them but I'm not sure

  • Asian Hornets need to be reported, but the native species can be treated like common wasps, they are both harmless if not provoked.

I think that's the ones I was thinking of @raisingirl. I knew there had been a new interloper mentioned, but since we don't get hornets here at all, I probably didn't take an awful lot of notice.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
