I bought a few plants from SR. They are in small pots. Would people advise that I plant out now, or overwinter in a cold frame/greenhouse? I had assumed I could plant out now, but googling sowed some doubt on this. I am in the nether regions of SE London
I always overwinter small plants, but often just against the house walls or in among other plants. That's usually ample protection. I've got some small seedlings of my centaurea in among other plants, and under the kitchen windows where it's quite sheltered. Most of them should make it, even with a colder winter.
An open cold frame would be fine though, if you have one, although you're more likely to get away with having things under a bench or against a wall etc.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
So I take it you keep them mostly in pots? These will need to go somewhere sunny, ultimately. I have cold frames and a greenhouse where they could go. I should perhaps pot them on at least.
Pot them on if they need it, but I'm not sure I'd bother. It'll depend on your conditions though. All my small plants - cuttings etc, are just in 2 or 3 inch pots until they're big enough to plant out. That will be next summer probably - depending on what they are, and whether I have anywhere to put them! Some of them are for friends and family though
