Goldcrest Conifers

I bought some goldcrest conifers at a reduced price yesterday.  They had the odd patch of brown on them which I was examining when the head honcho of the garden centre appeared and said it was damage caused by the fact that they'd been left packed together for too long on the trolley when they arrived and all we had to do was cut it out.  If it wasn't fine, come back and see me he said.  Sounded genuine.  Then last night I thought if it was so easy to resolve, why hadn't he just done that and sold them at the full price.  They look healthy enough, but I'm wondering if I've been conned.  What do you think from the photos?

  • I suspect nobody wanted them at the full price. Conifers at garden centres are never really big sellers. Plus, even among conifers, Goldcrest are cheap. Looks like you've picked up two nice plants.
It's a great time to pick up bargains from GC's at the moment..they'll be more interested in setting up their nauseating, tacky Xmas displays.
  • I bought 7 actually.  :/  That's why I was a bit worried.  Though I did think if it was anything aphid-y or fungal-y, they wouldn't have left them there with all the other plants and similar conifers.  And yeah, the christmas displays were already blossoming.
  • For the price I think they are a much underrated garden tree...they smell nice too.

Trim them out and they’ll be fine, although I don’t think that they regrow what is pruned out they will bush a bit as they grow so it won’t be noticeable.
  • So far there's only one that's been left with a bit of a hole in it, but I can position that so it's out of sight - it's for hedging.
  • They do tend to go brown quite easily if they are touching anything, I hav 2 of mine which have been too close to a wall and now are practically bare where I pruned it out. They really don’t care, just kept on growing and now have one “flat” side! I would say bargain and enjoy the lovely fresh smell every time you brush past them.
Marne la vallée, basically just outside Paris 🇫🇷, but definitely Scottish at heart.

I think those will be fine too. They're readily available and very easy.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks for the reassurances.  Feeling better about them now.
