They are beetle larvae, but I can't ID which one. They are beneficial insects in general (apart from some like Vine weevil, but this isn't what you have.) However, you don't want them in pots and they would prefer to be underground, so the best thing to do is dig a shallow hole under a hedge or bush, place them in and gently cover over.

Thank you Bob the Gardener..have put them somewhere safe.didn’t think they were vine weevil but wasn’t sure.
