How to avoid this problem

Dear gardeners, I’ve just planted flower bulbs here but either a cat or a fox keeps making holes in the soil at night. How can I prevent this from happening? What can I sprinkle on top?

It could also be squirrels if you have them @ariadna.bakhmatova.  Possibly a layer of chicken wire might help, although having other planting there would also be a good solution  :)

  • Oh yes we have lots of squirrels. Hm planting more stuff is tricky. How can I protect this from the squirrels?

A very deep layer of fine gravel worked for us.

Never had that happen, but cat droppings would keep the squirrels away.
  • Hi - there is another thread on this very topic with some useful advice on how to use chicken wire:

Chicken wire is the easiest route then, but a good layer of gravel might do the job, as suggested  :)
Just lay the chicken wire down in situ and peg it down with wire. It's not very attractive though, which is why some perennials planted over the area is better. The bulbs will just grow through them. Hardy geraniums are ideal to use as they'll grow almost anywhere, but things like Ajuga and Pachysandra are also good, especially if it's shady.
