Cheeky Robin

  • We feed live mealworms to a pair of robins when they're feeding nestlings ... one of them is particularly brave and comes to take them from our hand .... one morning when the door to the terrace was open and I was a bit slow in meeting his demands, the braver of the pair came into our sitting room, flew seven metres right across the room and perched on the rocking chair and shouted at me to get a move on and provide the mealworms.  😉
Sooo jealous! I would kill for a robin to eat from my hand 😭

We started with leaving mealworms in a shallow dish on a fence post. When he was comfortable taking them from the dish m, we would stand near to the post, getting closer as he got used to our presence … then I put the dish on my outstretched palm next to the fencepost … eventually we were able to do away with the dish and he would come to my outstretched hand.

After that he would come to me wherever I was in the garden … even taking mealworms from my hand when it was resting on my lap as I sat on the terrace 😊

You have to stand very still and to start with not even blinking and only breathing very shallowly,  and Gosh! my arm ached until we got to the last stage 😆
