Wims Red Hydrangea

Hi everyone.
I have just purchased ( at a huge discount) a Wims Red hydrangea. Does anyone know whether this can be grown / pruned next year to start the process of growing it as a standard? I have successfully done this with an other type of  hydrangea, but unsure if it can be done with Wims Red.
Thanks all.

  • I love my Wims Red...but I really hate standard forms of anything flowering. But can't imagine it would be a reason not to train it as such if there's a straight branch that would be suitable.

Feel free to try growing Wim's Red as a standard; you normally can do this with either all or most paniculatas. Win's Red gets about 1 meter tall. The smallest paniculata that you could try doing this to is probably Fire Light Tidbit, which grows up to two or three feet high.

Note that paniculatas whose blooms have a tendency to flop may not look as nice now as they originally do when they start blooming though. I am not sure if Wim's Red's blooms tend to flop by the end of the growing season.

P.S. - I have even seen "regular" mopheads (hydrangea macrophylla) grown as standards too but only on the Internet.

I'd agree that you can certainly try it. Not something I'd ever do either, as I'm with @amancalledgeorge on that, but I'd agree that paniculatas are probably not ideal, for the reasons @luis_pr gives.
