Nasturtium self seeded - will the seedlings survive winter?

PolarisPolaris Posts: 11
I have loads of nasturtium seedlings that have popped up in the last few weeks. I know they're annuals, but if I lift them and keep them in an unheated greenhouse for the winter, are they likely to survive to flower next year? I assume if I leave them in the border they'll die with the frosts.

They're quite tough, so if you don't get any serious frosts, or long term spells of frost, they might be fine.
They don't always do well being moved though, which is why they're better sown direct wherever you want them to grow.  :)

If the seedlings don't survive, there will be plenty of ungerminated seeds that will sprout early summer.

In case anyone is interested in how this turned out, I moved some of the seedlings into an unheated greenhouse for the winter. They survived and started flowering in March. I moved them out into the garden after the last frosts but they didn't do too well then. But as B3 said, the ungerminated seeds in the ground then sprouted and I got new flowers that way.

The ones I didn't overwinter were ok with frost, but died instantly in a bit of snow. I'll probably overwinter seedlings again though because it was nice to have the bright colours in the greenhouse earlier in the year.

My OH always plays safe by taking all the seed pods off and saving them in a paper bag until the following season.  That way they're pretty much guaranteed to succeed and provide flowers for summer salads with their unusual taste.
  • The seedlings should flower until first frosts so you'll still get a good display. I wouldn't worry

Wish I’d collected the seed last Autumn. I had one nasturtium that appeared in a grass border last year . I left it to its own devices and it was covered in flowers….I assumed I’d get seedlings in the Spring or early Summer but not one. I have mice in that area and wondered if the seeds  been eaten by them, or the dreaded wood pigeons.
