Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • @janetbhome Everything has been said about the worms, just my thoughts about using a membrane, which I also would take off.

We have in front of our house a small 5x5 meter area where the previous owner had put a membrane and chippings on top about 15 years ago. Over the time, the weeds grew horrendous through the membrane. A neighbour had laid out another membrane on top for 18 months in 2018/2019 hoping the weeds die. Once taken off, the old perennial weeds started to grow happily just two weeks later. I try to tackle the real problem but fail constantly because of the membrane. Since that area belongs to the council and is not my property, I now only remove the worst once a month.
Membranes don't do any good in a long term. They turn into the real problem years later, in my experience.

    I my garden.
