I have been told that you shouldn't grow carrots and parsnips in the same area, I am going to try it next year when I have finished landscaping the garden, due to my wife in the early stages of dementia so she can help me with the garden , so I wont be wondering if she is alright, because I know in some way it will help her to be involved and recognize things.

Carrots and parsnip seeds prefer to be sown direct,  did you try them in modules/pots first? That could be a reason for the funny shapes,  all eatable though,  just a light scrape with a knife.
That could be it, I did sow in pots and transplanted, but the seeds sown straight in also grew into odd shapes, so I'm thinking that maybe the compost was too rich.

Carrots certainly don't like rich soil. If you have any containers with annuals or even other veg, you can use the spent compost from those for carrots next year.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • We can't grow parsnips for many reasons and have to sow carrots in our polytunnel.
They don't like to be replanted and need to be sown in situ.
Even in our polytunnel the carrots can fork due to a hard area/stone that we haven't come across.
