I lived in tropical Sri Lanka until I was 18 when I left for America.
@Jac19 When ( roughly ) were you living in Sri Lanka and did you ever come across G. elegans ( Indian Star tortoise ) at all ?
I don't want to give years, private details in a public forum, particulearly where I have been attacked. I would not know their zoological names, Philllipa, as I studied pure and applied mathematics, physics, and chemistry. I never studied zoology.
I have seen lots of tortoises there, but where we live they were medium sized.
The low country areas were warm and humid (about 80 Fahrenheit) except during the monsoon seasons of torrential rain.
Dove and Wonky, what adorable pictures! Is that belt one of the elasticated ones with a snake catch at the front? Used to wear those over my regulation school skirt, rolled over at the top to achieve a fashionable ( but according to the nuns, indecent ) length!
Yes @Ergates ... it's an elasticated snake belt ... I still wear them all the time with my jeans ... you can buy adult sized ones (even generously sized adults) on Ebay

I went to a Buddhist, girls only, private school. We were never allowed to do change the uniform. It never occurred to me. Prefects were standing around everywhere and would cite girls and take them to the vice principal's office if anything was out of line.
I guess it would have been a girls only Christian convent private school if there were nuns looking after you. Why would one want to court trouble with short skirts if boys were not around?

@Jac19 That's fair enough about dates which was why I said "roughly". Just the decade would have sufficed and I only asked that because it may have made a difference re the "visible" population as such. I acquired mine in 1972 before many of the restrictions re importation came in. Anyway, not to worry. Your mention of Sri Lanka just caught my eye. If you weren't really into it at the time you would perhaps not have taken much notice but the G elegans are quite distinctive in their markings from a young age and would be classed as "medium" I suppose ( if you go from the small European to the large Galapagos ). Mine reached a size of approx. 35 cm in length and 22 in height by the age of 45 to 50 years. That could be a bit distorted tho being in captivity - always makes a difference.

I didn’t know you could still get them! I used to ‘borrow’ mine from my brothers - I was a skinny little thing then. Impressive selection of flowers, and a cute dog!
philippasmith2 I was a child of the 70s. My parents and extended family are still there, while some are in the US and some are in the UK and France. We never considered a tortoise to be a pet there. They were swimming around in the streams we would wade in.
The beaches were warm with warm grainy sand, and the sea water was warm to wade and swim in. There were lots more fish and crabs out in the sea there. Some get trapped in little rock ponds as the tide recedes and birds and we could catch them.
Those elasticated S belts were all the rage for a while at college! I remember wearing one with a pencil skirt and tight top. This was just before Twiggy came on the scene and my shape went out of fashion.
@didyw - my mum always used to say she was the wrong shape at the wrong time. Flat and skinny when big and buxom was the thing in the 40's and 50's and big(ger) and more buxom when everyone was Twiggy thin and flat in the 60's😁
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
I always said I was the same shape as Twiggy but with a bit more bust ... my waist and hips were the same measurement as hers back then, believe it or not ...
