Butternut Squash turning spotty

Hi there
I read that I should harvest my butternut squash in late September. The plants were looking spent so I did this. I got 3 decent squashes. They were looking pristine with no blemishes. I left them on the table in the kitchen for their skins to toughen up for storage. However, they are now developing blemishes. Should I worry about this? Do I need to use them up if this is a sign of deterioration?
TIA for any advice
Bob

  • Looks like a fungal issue - I've had the same before - use them now as they won't store.  I just cut away any discoloured or soft parts, roast and then freeze them for later use in soups etc.  The rot starts at the surface and moves inwards, so a thick peeling may be all that is needed, if you are quick.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • That’s brilliant. Thank you very much for this really helpful advice. I’ll get on to it this morning
