Hi here, thanks for some of your answers but here is some photos of my hog house my friends, and you can only see one brick covering the front door entrance, iv put it 5” from the doorway and there are actually 3 bricks on top of each other so it pretty much covers the full height of the door and its got a hook to keep the roof that keeps it closed at all times. How much would you pay for a cheap good camera and what are they called so i can look about my friends.. Thanks.. Xx
If you search for "wildlife camera" on Amazon or Ebay for example, there will be loads to choose from. It's amazing what happens in your garden overnight
Hi there, im a newbie here so hello to all!! I’v purchased a hedgehog house with a baffle to stop cats and foxes entering and set it up as a feeding chamber and iv set up 3 bricks on top of each other 5” from the hog home entrance doorway! But im still not convinced its the hedgehog iv saw a couple if times in my garden so my question is would birds enter my hog home or a squirrel? And eating wet cat food and hedgehog food home! As only thing i think that would fit in would be a bird for sure, Or maybe a small squirrel that do live around my area. I know for sure now its not a fox or a cat now due to putting up 3 bricks 5” from the hog home doorway! So im just trying to eliminate what other animals are eating the cat food and hedgehog food so i know for sure its the hedgehog that’s eating the food! I feed birds also but im suspicious it coukd be the Starlings entering my hog house as i saw a bird poop right at the entrance of hig house. Iv not saw any hedgehog poop in house or near... anyway thanks guys for your answers i will be very much appreciate your input here... Cheers Pauline.. Xx
Do you want a hog house for hibernation or a feeding station? Two quite different structures and I would treat them as such. That’s what we do. The feeding station is very simple. Yes, you’ll get the odd mouse and rats in there. We never had any problems with squirrels or cats and would often have the wildlife camera set up to really see what was coming under the cover of darkness. Birds would often use it too, especially in the early hours of dawn. I think you’re more likely to get rats if using a hog house for feeding rather than a dedicated feeding station.
When I first started feeding hedgehogs I made the mistake of putting food in the house. As you put it in a quiet corner, usually near a hedge/fence, it only attracted rats/mice, and hogs won't use it then. I learnt it needs a separate feeding station, somewhere out in the open where others won't like to come. So the house like yours is for resting/ sleeping and my feeding station is like this. I hope this helps @jakeandjoeshow and yes cats don't try to eat the hog food, as I don't put out wet dog/cat food.

Thanks @Jac19 They don't last more than 18 months as the sun perishes the plastic, but they are easy to clean and I can watch the hogs from my conservatory 😁

Hang on - if the bricks cover the door, how would a hedgehog get in?
Do you mean there's a gap of five inches between the bricks and the door?
If so - yes, a cat would get in there. They do it no bother here.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Failure is always an option.
