I have 3 chilly plants outdoors with lots of green chillies on. Shall I pick them now as it's getting very cold?
You can preserve chillies of any colour by putting them in a screw top jar and cover with vinegar. No heating or cooking. They do not collapse and the vinegar doesn't taste when you cook with them.
I have, in the past, brought chilli plants in to help their fruit ripen but with very poor results. I then decided to "open freeze" the chillies, the way I freeze cherries, and then place them in freezer bags. That has been successful. Naturally, they lose their crispness but are absolutely fine in cooking.
I have also overwintered plants indoors but I have found that the new seedlings catch up very quickly and are more productive.
For aphids and whitefly, I have used Pete's method. Generally, I first place the pot in a plastic bag (the sort I use for my kitchen bin), twist the bag round the base of the plant carefully and place a firm hand over it, in the hope that the soil remains intact! I then plunge it in the water and with the other hand try to wash away as many of the pests as I can before I get exhausted!
I have now decided that's too much work for little reward; so, from now on, it will be fresh beginnings every spring for me!

Just picked the first one in the gh. 1,060,000 scovills. Not sure what I’m going to with him/her yet though. There are still loads of green ones so I might have to bring it in soon.
