Onion Sets

Please can anyone advise about buying onion sets ... I am looking for Red Baron onion sets ... but 'these days' they seem to be sold by the kilo, 500g or 250g. I have no idea how many onions this would provide! 🤷🏼‍♀️ Any thoughts ... and supplier suggestions would be great.
Last year I left it until March to order them and they were difficult to get hold of.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this!

  • One supplier I use (Fothergills) says this. "Onion sets are delivered in 250g packs, each containing around 80 sets" I would have guessed around the 50 mark but it's that area anyway.

I usually have a 250g bag of each and have too many. Next year I won't plant them all and give them a little more space... Maybe..
  • Thank you - that's really helpful. 😊
  • We go to a nursery and buy the number we want. They are sold by weight and we haven't had an issue with them and this year we had our best onions in years.
    But can't remember the variety..sorry.

I presume, as per the variety name, it's a red onion which, for me, are never as prolific as their white counterparts.  I do like bertrand-mabel  does and, for €2, get a sizeable bagful.  To play safe, I usually buy two bags but have plenty left over (pic attached).  If the  heart is set on one particular variety, by all means go for it BUT buying what the local supplier sells is often a good indicator as to what does best in your area, hence his reason for stocking them.
