Hypertufa is probably easier to make a bigger container with - but it's getting the cement that's the problem. Perhaps it's easier in certain areas. I'm not sure how good it is in very cold areas either - re freezing and cracking, so that might be a consideration.

I covered an old ammo crate ( from when we lived near Catterick) with hypertufa when we moved here in '84 and it was only last year that I decided that it needed re-doing. That's quite a few cold and freezing winters it has survived, so worth the trouble of doing it well I think, given the cost of stone containers.
Good to know @Buttercupdays. It's something I've thought of doing now that the terracotta pans have finally succumbed, and it would certainly be cheaper than buying new ones. A nice project too
